Looking for ways to give back to your community? Here are some inspiring ideas for International Volunteer Day this year.
November 5th is International Volunteer Day, and I’ve been thinking about how I could get more involved in my community and give back. What many people don’t understand is that volunteering is a form of self-care and can make you feel as good as you make someone else feel.
Growing up, we usually had clubs or school events that prioritized giving back to the community but as you grow up there are less organized events for you to go to with your work or by yourself unless you seek it out. So in honor of International Volunteer Day, here are some ideas of meaningful ways you could give back with lots or little time.
Volunteer at a Soup Kitchen
A quick Google search will show you the soup kitchen nearest to you, so grab a couple of friends and head out for a day of serving those less fortunate than you. Many soup kitchens are understaffed and in need of volunteers, and seeing the smiles on the faces of the patrons will feel incredibly rewarding. You could also end up meeting some interesting people with their own unique stories to tell!
Donate Your Old Clothes
Rather than letting your old clothes collect dust in your closet, dedicate a day to going through everything you don’t wear anymore and pack it up to be donated. You can also try calling around to local women’s shelters and asking if they are in need of more clothing. With the cold winter weather starting to roll in, things like winter coats, hats, gloves, and scarves will also be much-needed, so keep an eye out for these items when going through your closet.
Food Drive
Usually around the holidays there are various food drives going on. Consider heading to the store and buying canned goods that can be donated locally!
Donate Or Volunteer at a Toy Drive
This is one that is great for you to do around the holidays. If you have the means, consider going to a toy store, Target or Walmart and finding age appropriate toys for your local toy drive. Even if you only have a little to spend, buying small toys will be appreciated. If you don’t have the means to give back by purchasing toys, consider volunteering your time at a toy drive and helping organize the donations and get them ready to send out.
Volunteer at an Animal Shelter
If you are an animal lover like myself, this is the perfect opportunity for you! Look up all the areas near you and groups that offer volunteering opportunities. Often times these involve walking dogs, cleaning up, folding blankets and doing the laundry but seeing the dogs that you are helping out fills your heart.
How do you plan to give back on International Volunteer Day?
